Volunteering

The foundations of Positive Life were established in 1986 by a small team of volunteers and are as essential to our work now as they were then.

Positive Life volunteers contribute to all we do - supporting and improving the lives of people living with and affected by HIV; challenging stigma, through campaigning and lobbying; and preventing the increase in HIV infection through training, education and raising awareness.

Our roles are flexible, interesting and rewarding and we provide all our volunteers with quality training and ongoing support to ensure they are motivated and confident in their volunteering activities. Click on the role descriptions below to find out more.

Telephone Support Volunteer

Support Services Volunteer

Community Engagement Volunteer

We generally hold an annual recruitment drive and are particularly keen to hear from people who share our ambition to de-stigmatise HIV in Northern Ireland.

What happens then?

  • we’ll forward you an expression of interest form to complete and return
  • and then we’ll invite you to attend an informal ‘get to know you’ meeting to chat about your skills, experience and interests and give you the opportunity to find out more about our work.

If we have a role to match your skills

  • we’ll carry out reference and Access NI checks as appropriate
  • and you’ll then be invited to attend our volunteer induction and training session.

Once successfully completed, you’ll have a chance to meet our staff and volunteers and you’ll be allocated a member of the team to be your named support and assist you throughout your induction.

Policy & Advocacy

At Positive Life we aim to be the voice of people living with HIV in Northern Ireland. We do this by engaging with a range of stakeholders to ensure that our issues are being heard and that we receive support and work collectively with those both in the sexual health field as relevant.

In doing this we are pro-active members of the following groups:

  • All Party Group for Sexual Health
  • Sexual Health Improvement Network
  • Sexual Health Information Exchange Group Long Term Conditions Alliance, NI

Our advocacy work is guided by the principle that every person should be valued and respected, and ensures that people are not excluded because of the prejudices they face. Advocacy promotes a person centred approach in everything it aims to achieve and is based on the belief that everyone has the right to:

  • be respected and listened to
  • be involved in decisions that affect their lives
  • have aspirations for their future
